Front page kanji menu alignment fixed

Posted in fixes at 1:47 am by Chris

the front page is fixedThanks to everyone who pointed out that the image map on the front page was all screwed up on certain browsers; I spotted that myself a little while ago but was dreading having to sort it out as it was using an intricate javascript-rollover-sliced-image-map which was approximately twenty times more complicated than it needed to be.

Anyway, the whole thing’s been ripped out and replaced with a single image-map. It doesn’t rollover any more (aww) and it’s still a bit of a search-engine-unfriendly, late-nineties throwback, but it’ll do for now.

Missing images fixed (repeater kanji, etc.)

Posted in kanji, fixes, kana, typos at 7:05 pm by Chris

the infamous 'repeater' kanjiWotcha - just a brief post to let you know that I’ve fixed a couple of missing images. The ‘repeater’ kanji is now in place, as is the hiragana character for “cha”, which was missing from the SEKI / aka - red page.

I also fixed a couple of typos on the kana explanation pages - a typo in “Ministry of Education” and one place where I wrote “hiragana” but meant “katakana“. D’oh!

I think there are a couple more typos that I need to sort out; I’ll hunt them down over the weekend and let you know how the fight goes. Have a good weekend yourselves; don’t study too hard.

Update: oh, and I forgot to add, “Thank you” to everyone who e-mailed or used the feedback form to let me know about those bugs. I do check everything, obviously, but in a site this size, occasional errors are inevitable. Thanks to all of you who take the time to let me know about them; it’s greatly appreciated. (And yes, I know the front page is a bit screwy in Safari and Firefox at the moment - that’s next on the list.)

JLPT Level 2 Kanji Batch 12 Updated: Detailed Info Added

Posted in kanji, updates at 5:26 pm by Chris

SHIKI - know, discriminateOk, those of you making your way through the Level 2 kanji will no doubt be delighted to hear that I’ve uploaded detailed info for the 25 characters in batch 12. You can get to them via the JLPT Level 2: View All index, and they’ll also show up via the JLPT Level 2 Random Testing pages.

A reminder about the batches: these are just my own way of breaking down the 755 Level 2 kanji into manageable chunks. Don’t expect to encounter the “batch” system in the official textbooks or the test itself; I’m afraid it’s all one glorious free-for-all in the real world.

A couple of you have asked about the Level 1 kanji… mmm. At some point I’m planning to switch the site from its current HTML-and-string format across to a snazzy database-and-dilithium-crystals affair, and one of the main topics of debate here at Kanji SITE HQ is whether to do that before or after adding in the Level 1 kanji. Obviously, I’d rather not do a ton of work on the Level 1 kanji in the old format, only to replace it all a month or so later with the new version… but it might be handy to have a complete “old” version of the site in the meantime, for completeness’s sake - not to mention as a backup if the new version goes spectacularly wrong. Hmmm. Watch this space, is all I can say for now.

The Kanji SITE Creaks Back Into Life

Posted in general at 12:49 pm by Chris

Hello and welcome to the all-new Kanji SITE blog, which will keep you up to date on all Kanji SITE news and updates. This blog replaces the previous Status page, which will be taken outside and shot any day now.

The more astute among you will have noticed that the site hasn’t been updated in a while. Yes, well, it’s certainly been some time and I apologise for that. I’ve been, er, otherwise engaged - and no, that isn’t a euphemism for “in jail” or anything like that. Just busy with other stuff.

The good news, though, is that I recently managed to scrape a pass in the JLPT Level 2, on only my second attempt. I won’t say it was “mission accomplished” or anything like that - I still have a way to go until my Japanese is at the level I would like it to be - but it was nice to get it. In other news, I finally left Japan earlier this year. Yes, after eight years of miso soup and canned coffee, I’ve moved back to the UK. I’m enjoying being back, but good grief I could kill for some decent sushi.

Anyway, I’m going to be updating the site a lot more over the next year or so. I have grand plans, but the first step is to get the Level 2 kanji detail pages finished. Then I want to completely overhaul the site, replacing its quaint static HTML with something a bit more handy, and bringing in some new features. More on that later.

To stay up to date with developments here, you can subscribe to the blog’s RSS feed or the existing e-mail list, both of which I’ll use to announce all news and updates as they happen.

So, welcome back and please stay tuned for more updates. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in, and hope that the site continues to prove useful to at least some of you out there. Please continue to send me your feedback, or you can say hi via the blog comments.

It’s good to be back.
