Level 2 kanji updated
I've added more detailed information for batch 7 of the Level 2 kanji: examples of usage, similar-looking kanji, the usual stuff. Hopefully this marks the start of a renewed drive to get all the Level 2 kanji on-line. Enjoy.

I've changed the style of the right-hand side kanji pages slightly. The font sizes for the on- and kun-readings and the english core meanings have been reduced so that they display better, especially on the pages with loads of different readings (such as MEI / MYOU / aka(rui) etc - "bright"). More changes on the way, so stay tuned.

I just wanted to take a second to reiterate my requests policy - I do not provide translations. I'm sorry, but due to sheer volume of mail, I cannot answer requests along the lines of "Please tell me the kanji for Howard" or "Can you send me the kanji for lawnmower". Quite apart from the amount of time it would take to research all of these, my Japanese simply isn't good enough to provide this kind of service. I'm not a translator.

If you want an English word written in kanji, try Jeffrey's online dictionary. This excellent dictionary will give you romanized Japanese results and an option to "Reload with inlined kanji", which will give you the kanji you crave. The images are quite small, however, so if you still want a particular kanji in the style found on my site, you can then ask me for the specific Japanese word.

If you want a name translated into kanji, you should read this part of my FAQ and consider buying this book, which will tell you all you need to know. Choosing kanji for names is a complicated process, but the book explains it all very well - I highly recommend it.

In short, requests for "the kanji for chaos" will go unanswered. Requests for "konran (chaos)" will probably be answered almost immediately - or at least as soon as I can get to a Japanese keyboard.

I hope that clears things up. Please don't think me rude if I don't reply straight away - I get dozens of these requests a week.

Whoops - massive typo fixed (thanks Alexandre for spotting it). 244 instances of "JPLT" on some of the right-hand pages... oops. It should of course be "JLPT" - and now it is. Surprised no-one noticed it earlier....

Okay, I've just spent half an hour mailing 20 or so sitemasters who link to The Kanji SITE, asking them to ensure that they link to the front page (i.e. www.kanjisite.com ) and that they capitalise the name of the site correctly: The Kanji SITE and not "KanjiSite", "Kanji-Site", "Kanjisite.com" or anything similar. Sorry to be anal about this, but I'm trying to standardize my "branding" across the Web.

So if you link to the site, which I am very happy for you to do, please make sure that you get the name right (i.e. The Kanji SITE) and that you point to the front page ( www.kanjisite.com ). Many thanks for your cooperation.

Hmmm, lots of readers appear to be coming from messages posted on ezboard.com discussion forums - but I can't seem to search any of them to see what people are saying about the site. If anyone could cut and paste and mail me any of the posts which link to The Kanji SITE, I'd be really grateful. Thanks in advance.

Right, I'm back from my holiday (spent a little time in Kyoto, did a bunch of touristy things around Tokyo) and ready to dive back in to things. I hope to get the updates back on track in the near future. Holiday snaps, if you care, may be on-line soon at tokyotales.com, so those of you who read it should keep an eye open for them.

Minor update: well, actually a non-update. I'm on holiday for the next week, and as such will be unavailable to answer queries or update the site. See you when I get back, and then I'll be able to get on with the task of getting the mailing list script and the random test function sorted out. Have a good week...
